Intro and Updates

We are so excited to get the season started for our American Fork Junior Guard 2016! We had a GREAT turn out at auditions and want to thank everyone who helped us make that be such a great success!

This is going to be more of an introduction email and just to help get everyone get used to how we communicate. I will be sending out an email every Sunday to just let you know what we will be doing throughout the week. As it gets closer to competition season I will be emailing call times and necessities for the competition.

I will also post the weekly emails to the blog. If you ever feel like you have missed any information, check the blog and then let me know that you didn't get an email so that you don't miss out on everything. For new parents, our blog site is afbguard.blogspot.com

This email is going to be the best form of communication for me. I have this email attached to my phone and will get a notification just as quickly as a text. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns!

I also need to know if your student is unable to make it to a rehearsal. It is important for your child to be at every rehearsal, but I understand that things come up. Sickness, vacations, etc. When a student misses, again it can become a safety issues for both your student and the team. So just shoot me an email letting me know what's going on and if we need to do anything.

Our first payment of $100 was due today. If you missed it, don't panic. Just try to get it taken care of by the end of the week.

Please keep in mind, we have a mandatory camp coming up at the end of this month. It's set for December 28-30th from 8am-4pm at American Fork High School. As this date gets closer, I will provide more details for that camp.

You have made it through the email! Thank you for reading through this, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Weekly Update 3.22.15 & Information for Circuit Championships

Hello Everyone!

This is our last week of rehearsals to prepare for our Championships on Saturday!  This email will have a lot of information so please read over it carefully.

Here is our schedule for the week.

Monday:  6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
Tuesday:  3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. AFHS
Wednesday: 6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
Thursday: 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. RIFLES AFHS
Saturday:  Circuit Championships

Here is a breakdown of times for Saturday for quick reference.  I will go into more detail below:
Call Time: 7:05 a.m. LPHS
Prelims Performance Time: 8:47 a.m.
Students will tentatively be available to go home around 10 a.m.
FINALS ( all dependent on if we make finals, and what our score is in Prelims)
Call time between 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Performance Time between 3:45 p.m. - 4:08 p.m.
Awards over at  6:30 p.m.

Championships will be held at Lone Peak High School.  Because we have 5 teams in our division we will be competing in Prelims hoping to earn a spot at Finals.  Only the top 4 teams will go to finals.

Call time for Championships will be 7:05 a.m. in full hair, makeup, and uniform.  (Please remember what we have discussed about wearing ALL of your makeup and making sure your uniform doesn't have stains/holes in them)
We will be doing a quick equipment warmup out side so please dress warmly!  Wear what you need over your uniform so you can stay outside for about 20 minutes.

Parents!  You will need to drop your student off behind (the west side) the School.  That is where I will be waiting for them.  Please don't be late-  I am shortening our warmup time a little so you don't have to come as early.

Please come ready to compete, get up early enough to get ready and not feel rushed.  Eat breakfast early enough that you wont feel sick.  Please take care of yourselves Saturday morning so you can have the best performance possible.

Our performance time for Prelims is at 8:47 a.m.
We will know within about an hour or so if we made finals.  If we DO make finals we will send your students home to get some rest and have lunch and will have a second call time dependent on when our finals performance is. Please don't plan on your student staying during the break. It will be a long day for them and I don't want them tired for their finals performance. If we do not make finals we will make a plan from there.

If we make Finals we will also be performing between 3:45 and 4:08 depending on how we do in prelims.
It is very important that all students stay until awards are over.  I know there are extenuating circumstances but this is the most important competition of the season.  Awards will be over at 6:30 at which time you can take your student home.  We do finals awards as a full retreat.  This means that all of the students stay out on the floor for awards and receive a medal if they place.  It is a really special time and your student will not want to miss out.

I know there is a lot of information in this email, so please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Whitney

P.S.
This is my last weekly update for the season!  I will let you know when we have our guard party scheduled so that you can all attend that.

Thank you for the great season.  Let's finish out strong.

Weekly Update 3.15.15

Hello Everyone!

Congrats on such a great performance.  You guys did so well and I'm so glad it reflected in your scores.  I will try to get you the link to the video asap!

We have 2 weeks before our Circuit Championships on March 28th.  We will be making some changes and improving every rehearsal so be sure not to miss.

Our schedule this week:
Monday: 6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
Tuesday: 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. AFHS
*** Due to Leadership and Drum Major tryouts we will be having our rehearsal outside!  Please dress appropriately.  It should be warm but please bring appropriate clothing and shoes just in case you get cold.
              5:45 Pictures at DS Portraits.
Please bring your uniform -makeup- and hair supplies with you to rehearsal so you have enough time to get ready and get to the portrait studio by 5:45!

Also!  Please take care to wash your uniform and have all of the pieces.  A lot of you keep changing your uniform every week and I would like you to look your best for pictures and for our Championships.  Please wash your uniform and wear the appropriate under clothing.  This includes not wearing stained or holey shirts or leggings.  I have spoken to a few of you about bra straps- and too short of skirts and haven't seen you change it- please do so by Tuesday.

Wednesday: 6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. Rehearsal AFJH

Thank you for all of your hard work this season.  It is really paying off.  Again, I urge you to take care of yourselves and stay healthy- you do not want to miss any rehearsals between now and our championships.  At this point in the season we will probably have to write you out of the spot if you miss.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Congrats, again.

Weekly Update 2.15.15

Parents and Students,

I am so so proud of your performance yesterday.  I can see you all coming out of your shells more and more and hope to see even more in the future.  The flag feature was super clean and the show just looked so much better as a whole.  The good news is that our score went up 6 points from last week to this week, and we went up a placement.  Wonderful job.  We have a couple more things to change and parts of the show to fill in.  I am hoping with the 2 week break between now and the Westlake Competition that our show will be finished and ready to go.

I didn't take a video this week, but if one surfaces I will send you the link.  Parents:  if you took a video and you don't mind me uploading it to our private Youtube channel please let me know.

This coming week is a little different because of President's Day:

NO rehearsal Monday!

Tuesday:  6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH

No After school rehearsal Tuesday!

Wendesday:  6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
Thursday:  Rifles 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. AFHS

Thank you for all of your hard work, it is really paying off.

Please let me know if you have any questions

Weekly Update 2.1.15 & Important info about the Northridge Competition

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for everyone who came and helped us paint our floor, props, and backdrops.  We were able to get almost all of it done in one night and are set up for a great season.

This week is a normal rehearsal schedule and then we have our very first competition on Saturday at Northridge High School.
Monday:  6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
Tuesday:  3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.  AFHS
Wednesday:  6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
Thursday:  Rifles 3:30 p.m. - 5:30  AFHS

Saturday: Call time is TBD at American Fork High.  I will let you know as soon as I know, but it will be between 12 and 1 p.m.  You will need to have your full hair, makeup, and uniform on!
Performance time: 3:01 p.m.
Awards:   6:30 p.m.
We will board the bus and leave as quickly as possible after awards.  I would assume that we will be leaving around 7:30 and the bus ride is about 1 hour.

Northridge High School:
2430 North Hillfield Rd; Layton, Utah 84041

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for children and students with an activity card, and $20 for families of 5.

Please bring the following:
 - A change of clothes for after we perform.  You will have about 3 hours after we perform to watch other guards.
- Garment bag for storing your uniform.  You can purchase these for fairly cheap from Walmart etc.
- Money for food, or dinner from home, snacks. There will be concessions to buy food from, or you can bring food from home.  Please eat lunch before your call time.
- Makeup, hairspray, bobby pins, hair elastics etc. for touchups.  After a long bus ride we want to make sure our hair and makeup looks fresh.
- Your equipment- you are in charge of getting your equipment to and from the show.  You should be taking your equipment home to practice anyway, but if you leave your equipment at the jr high on Wednesday, we will not be able to get it out for you on Saturday.

Most girls bring a small duffle bag with hair and makeup supplies, food, electrical tape, feminine hygiene products, etc.  We will have an area to store our equipment and personal bags.

Parents, if you come to watch your child perform, you are more than welcome to take them home instead of them riding the bus.  To do this, you will need to come talk to me and make sure I see you with your child, it cannot be a sibling or friend's parent.  Because of liability, I will need to see you to release your student.   Please do not take your child home early unless there is an extenuating circumstance.  Our portion of the competition does not technically get over until our awards ceremony is over and we will sit as a team until that time.  Again, if there is an extenuating circumstance please let me know before the day of the competition.

You are more than welcome to stay and watch the remainder of the show and support the  American Fork A, Open, and Wasatch Independent teams.   Your child will only be able to sit along the back sideline unless you purchase a ticket for them to sit on the front.  If you paid to attend the competition, but don't want to purchase a ticket for your student, you are more than welcome to sit in the back with them if you would like.

I am very happy with the progress we have made as a team.  I am excited to go to our first competition and see you all perform!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Weekly Update 1.25.15

Hello Everyone,

We are back to normal this week, here is the schedule:

Monday:     Rehearsal 6 a.m. - 7:45 am AFJH
Pizza Pie Cafe Fundraiser All Day

Tuesday:    Rehearsal 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. AFHS
Pizza Pie Cafe Fundraiser All Day

Wednesday: DRESS Rehearsal 6 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
                   Pizza Pie Cafe Fundraiser  5:00 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Thursday:  Rifle Rehearsal 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. AFHS
Pizza Pie Cafe Fundraiser All Day

For more details about the Pizza Pie Cafe fundraiser click this LINK

I stated it in my last e mail, but wanted to solidify details in this one.  I originally gave you until next Monday, Feb. 2nd to have your uniform ready for our dress rehearsal.  This, however, will only allow you 5 days to get a replacement if your uniform doesn't work out.  I would like to give you some more time if this is the case.  Please come to Wednesday's rehearsal with your uniform on.  I will give you extra time to change for school.  This dress rehearsal will help us make sure that your uniform is the appropriate color and fit.  This will also help us see if it will stay in place while you are moving around.  We don't want you to have to be pulling it up or down or fussing with it during the performance.  Lastly we need to make sure everyone's uniform looks good together on the floor.

Thank you for your understanding in this.  If you absolutely cannot get your uniform by Wednesday, I understand.  Please do your best, but understand that the longer you wait to get it, the less time you have to fix it if it doesn't work.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Weekly Update 1.18.15

I want to congratulate everyone on their first performance of the season!  You all did so well and we are very proud of how you conducted yourselves during the show.   I hope you had fun and can't wait for our first competition Feb 7th.

Here is this weeks schedule,  please note that we don't have school tomorrow so there will be no rehearsal.  Instead of just missing out on that rehearsal we have rescheduled it for another day. This happens a couple of times this season so make sure you aren't surprised.  If you ever have questions about our rehearsal or competition schedule it can be found on the blog: www.afbguard.blogspot.com

Tuesday:       6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
                    3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. AFHS
Wednesday:  6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
Thursday:      Rifles 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. AFHS

We have a great fundraising opportunity for the winter guard program.  You can find all of the information on the blog if you click on this link:  http://www.afbguard.blogspot.com/2015/01/wg-fundraiser-pizza-pie-cafe.html

Lastly, a lot of you have shown me your uniforms that you have picked out.  Please remember that even if I said it looked good that the final decision cannot be made until we have our dress rehearsal.  We need to see everyone in their uniform at the same time to decide if it will work as a whole.  So please keep your receipts and tags until that time.    I would like to have our dress rehearsal as early as possible so that you have enough time to purchase another option if something doesn't end up working. As it is you would only have 5 days to get a replacement if your outfit clashes or you aren't able to move well in it.  I know I gave you until Feb 2nd but if there is anyway we can do it earlier that would be best.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Uniform Ideas

I have had a couple of questions regarding uniforms for this year.  I decided to make a post to help you all get a better idea of what we are looking for.

I would try to pick out something that you would wear to a nice play- not something you would necessarily wear every day.  If you find something a little more casual but it looks nice and dressy that will be fine.  Here are some pictures of styles and colors to help you.
Please remember that if a skirt comes more than an inch above your knee while standing, you will need leggings underneath it.  Also, skirts can't be shorter than your arm length even with leggings.  I am fine with a small accent belt in brown, but not necessarily the grey cardigan pictured below.
Good luck!  I am excited to see what you all come up with.

2015 Uniforms

Here is the moment you have all been waiting for, well, mostly the students.

I am really excited about our uniforms this year.  Since our show is about being "just the way you are"  we have decided to let you pick out your own uniform, and let your individuality shine.

Uniforms will need to meet the following requirements:

Colors must be Red, Turquoise, or Navy. You can wear just one, or all three if you like.   If you need to have a black or white undershirt for a dress or some leggings that will be allowed in small amounts.

You can really do anything except for long maxi skirts, pants (leggings are fine) or anything too baggy or loose fitting.  Clothing cannot look ratty or threadbare. Dresses or shirts must have at least 3 or 4 finger length on the shoulder (no thin or spaghetti straps)

I will allow scarves and hats as long as they do not get in the way or inhibit your performance in any way.   Small earrings are allowed as well.

I don't recommend socks/tights or anything covering the bottom of your feet. Nail polish and toe nail polish are not allowed.

Because purchasing your uniform will be up to you, we will be taking $25 off of your fees so you can use that money to purchase your uniform.

Hair:

Must be swept out of your face.  Again, let your individuality come through, but you must be able to move around without it falling into your face.  Hair must be clean and neat with no fly-aways or bed head.  I recommend hair being at least half up.

Makeup:

The following must be worn:
Foundation (liquid or powder but both is recommended)  Please be very careful               when selecting a shade, make sure that it matches your face and your               neck- and doesn't make you too pale or too orange.
Blush (soft pinks - no harsh or bright pinks/oranges)
Lipstick (no bright colors except red will be allowed. It is best to stick to within 2               shades of your natural lip color)
Eye shadow (more neutral tones soft browns, tans, purples)
Black Eyeliner (liquid or creme is best)
Black Mascara

Makeup is meant to bring out your features so you will most likely have to wear more than you are used to, but we don't want it to look outrageous.  Please have all of these items available to bring to every competition in a makeup bag for touch ups etc.  You can purchase all of these items fairly inexpensively from Walmart.

Deadline:
We will give you until the week before our first competition to find your uniform.  Please have your uniform purchased and wear it, along with how you will wear your hair, to our rehearsal on Monday, February 2nd so we can approve it and see how they look all together.  This will count as our dress rehearsal as well. That will give you 5 days to find something else if it will not work- so keep your receipts and tags until you get the final approval from me.  If you have questions or want to make sure your choice works before that don't hesitate to bring it to a rehearsal for us to look at.  The final decision will be made that Monday during rehearsal when we can see all of your choices together on the floor.

You can go out and buy the makeup this week so you can have it for Saturday, but it isn't necessary.  However, it will also need to be purchased no later than that Monday as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions!  Have fun!

Whitney

Weekly Update 1.11.15 & Important info about Eval Show

Hello Parents and Students!

We had a great week .  I was really impressed with how much the students retained over the break and how much we were able to accomplish this week.

Our schedule this week:
Monday:  6:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. AFJH
Tuesday: 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. AFHS
Wednesday 6:00 a.m. - 7:45 p.m. AFJH
Thursdays:  Rifle 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. AFHS
Saturday:  1:45 - 5:30 ?  Evaluation Show @ North West Middle School

For Saturday:  Call time is at 1:45 in the band room at AFHS with full hair, makeup, and uniform already on.  The bus will leave at 2:00, so please do not be late or we will have to leave you and you will have to find your own ride up to NWMS

Hair & Makeup:
Please have your hair pulled out of your face and up into some sort of bun/ponytail.  Please make sure all fly-aways are sprayed/pinned down so your hair looks nice and professional.
Makeup needs to be on and noticeable.  Please make sure that you are wearing the following:
Foundation (either powder, liquid, cream or combination of liquid/powder)
Blush
Lipstick (no bright shades- preferably something within 2 shades of your natural lip color)
Eye shadow (again no bright shades- more on the neutral side)
Eyeliner (black and liquid/waterproof is best)
Mascara (black)
We need to be able to see that you are wearing makeup from the stands so it will probably need to be on a little heavier than you would normally wear it.

Uniform:
Please wear all black/dark colors.  Preferably with no logos- but you can always turn things inside out.   Please don't go out and buy something if you don't have it.  Dark grey/navy will work too.

If you would like, you can find black dance pants pretty cheap at Walmart and they are always good to have for rehearsal.  Again, it is not required that you buy something if you don't have it.  Just do your best to find something dark to wear.   No loose or baggy clothing or jeans, please.

Parents, unfortunately  Eval is a closed show for only judges and UCGC board members to watch.  They will evaluate our show to help us be more successful this season.  I apologize if any of you were planning on traveling to see us perform at North West Middle, but you will probably want to wait for a closer competition and to see our show when it is more finished anyway.

I anticipate that we will be leaving NWMS around 4:30 and will be back to the high school around 5:30.

This is already a long email so I will send a separate email about our uniforms/hair/makeup for this season.  I will also post the information on the blog.

Thank you, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Video of show after first camp

Everyone did such a great job at our first camp! We got so much done and I am so proud of all of your efforts to learn fast and work hard.

Here is the link to our video from camp. I hope you can use it to remember your personal drill and choreography http://youtu.be/akyx3EirvPo

Remember to come on Monday having remembered everything you learned so we can run through it and start to clean! Enjoy the rest of your holiday!
